You wake up here and the rhythm is different. There are over thirty art galleries within walking distance—not as some aspirational future state, but as the actual texture of your mornings. Oval Beach on Lake Michigan draws swimmers and sunbathers year-round, famous enough that people plan vacations around it. The Saugatuck Chain Ferry, hand-cranked since 1838 and the only one of its kind left in the country, still operates across the river—the kind of thing you'd expect to read about in a history book, except you can actually use it. Butler Street, the main drag, keeps restaurants and coffee shops at arm's length; the nearest one is literally steps away. Mason Street Theatre stages Broadway-caliber productions. In summer, the population swells from 865 to nearly three times that as visitors arrive, which means the place has a dual identity: intimate and undiscovered in winter, electric and crowded in warm months.
