Allegan

Sitting on the Kalamazoo River about 40 miles southwest of Grand Rapids, Allegan is a small city whose identity seems permanently tied to the water—the Old Iron Bridge, built in 1886, still stands as a rusted sentinel over downtown, and the riverfront itself has been carved into a proper gathering place with a splash pad, a 20-foot outdoor fireplace, and a stage for whatever the season brings. The downtown sits within easy reach of everything: restaurants, a coffeehouse, and three breweries are all steps away, clustered around streets lined with over 400 antique dealers who descend on the fairgrounds the last Sunday of every month from May through September—the Michigan Antique Show, which sprawls across 115 acres and has become something of a regional pilgrimage. The Regent Theatre, its Art Deco facade still sharp after more than a century, runs first-run films for five dollars a ticket, while the 1919 Griswold Auditorium a few blocks over hosts the Allegan Community Players, Michigan's oldest theatre company, keeping a kind of cultural continuity alive in a place of about 5,200 people.
