How we ranked: Ranked by average Secchi transparency across every year from 2018 to 2023 that carried a reading, from the State of Michigan’s satellite water-clarity dataset. Limited to lakes of 25 acres or more with at least three years of readings.
What clarity is, and what it isn’t
Almost every "clearest lakes in Michigan" list is somebody’s trip report — the lakes the writer visited, ordered by how the water looked that day. This one is ordered by Secchi depth: how far down a standard black-and-white disk stays visible. It is the oldest measurement in limnology and the one the State of Michigan reports, so a 2018 reading compares directly with a 2023 one. Each lake is ranked on the average of every year it carries a reading, so one cloudy summer cannot crown or bury it.
What it does not tell you matters just as much. Transparency is not safety. Secchi depth says nothing about bacteria, contaminants, algal toxins, or whether a beach is posted. Some of the region’s healthiest lakes read low because tannins from surrounding wetlands stain the water the colour of tea. Before you swim, check EGLE and your county health department.
Why the readings come from a satellite
Volunteer monitoring only covers lakes that have volunteers, which skews toward large water with active associations. This dataset was built instead by processing Sentinel-2 imagery for every Michigan inland lake over 10 acres, year by year from 2018 to 2023 — so a quiet 40-acre lake in Newaygo County is measured on exactly the same terms as the best-known water in the region. Lakes under 25 acres, or with fewer than three years of readings, are excluded outright rather than demoted.

How this ranking is built
- Source
- Michigan Inland Lakes Water Clarity (2018–2023), published by Michigan EGLE and built by Olmanson, L. and Kiesling, R. (2025) at the University of Minnesota and the USGS Upper Midwest Water Science Center from Sentinel-2 imagery. Lake identity, depth and access come from the Michigan DNR; drive times are routed on the road network.
- Sample
- 239 lakes qualified and 40 are published. Floors: 25 surface acres and three years of readings. Covers Kent, Newaygo, Allegan, Montcalm, Lake, Muskegon, Ottawa and Osceola counties — Barry, Ionia, Mecosta, Oceana and Mason are not covered, so lakes such as Gull and Thornapple are absent by scope, not by score.
- Window
- Readings span 2018 to 2023, the full published range. Each lake is ranked on the average of the years it carries a reading, and the year count is shown so a three-year lake is never mistaken for a six-year one.
- Availability
- Loaded August 5, 2026. Recomputed daily, force-refreshed weekly. No lake can pay to be listed. The dataset is a public State of Michigan release.
Clearest Lakes in West Michigan: Frequently Asked
- What is the clearest lake in Michigan?
- We answer only for the part of Michigan we measure. Across Kent, Newaygo, Allegan, Montcalm, Lake, Muskegon, Ottawa and Osceola counties, Silver Lake in Kent has the clearest water on the state's satellite record — 17.9 ft (5.4 m) of average visibility — followed by Paradise Lake and Baptist Lake. Michigan has more than 11,000 inland lakes statewide, so we do not claim a statewide winner.
- What does Secchi depth actually measure?
- How deep a standard black-and-white disk stays visible when lowered into the water. It measures transparency and nothing else. It is the most widely used water-clarity measurement there is, which is why a reading in 2018 means the same thing as one in 2023.
- Does clear water mean clean water?
- No. Secchi depth says nothing about bacteria, E. coli, contaminants, algal toxins, or whether a swim advisory is in effect. A tea-coloured lake stained by wetland tannins can be perfectly healthy, and a very clear lake can still be posted. Check EGLE and your county health department before you swim.
- Which clear lakes are closest to Grand Rapids?
- 9 of the 40 ranked lakes are within a 45-minute drive of downtown. The clearest of those is Silver Lake at 17.9 ft (5.4 m), about 25 minutes out. Drive times are routed on real roads, not straight lines.
- Why are Torch Lake and Higgins Lake not here?
- They are not in West Michigan. This ranking covers the counties we hold parcel-level property data for — Kent, Newaygo, Allegan, Montcalm, Lake, Muskegon, Ottawa and Osceola. The state dataset measures northern and Upper Peninsula lakes too; they are simply not lakes we can tell a buyer anything useful about.
- How current is this ranking?
- Clarity data was last loaded on August 5, 2026, and the page recomputes daily. 239 lakes qualified and 40 are published, with a median of 14.3 ft (4.3 m). No lake can pay to appear on this list or to move up it.
