Sunset is when this stretch really shines—golden light hits the dunes just right before you head back down. The main draw is a serious 0.7-mile hike with over 400 stairs climbing through protected dune landscape to reach Lake Michigan, a challenge that keeps the shoreline feeling remote and earned rather than crowded. A shade canopy and boardwalk near the swimming beach offer an easier way in if you'd rather skip the stair workout. The area became one of Michigan's newest protected dune zones in 2004 after a decades-long conservation push that started when local students petitioned for preservation. Parking requires a permit ($8 daily Memorial Day through Labor Day, or $25 annual), and note that dogs aren't allowed in the natural area year-round. Just west of the park, the neighborhood itself mixes Lake Michigan cottages—some vintage, some recently rebuilt with modern kitchens and updated baths—alongside ranch homes on larger lots in developments like Hidden Creek, where you're close enough to walk or bike toward downtown but far enough out to feel removed from the main drag.
