Michigan Oaks

This stretch of Grand Rapids north of Fulton Street East came together in the 1920s and hasn't changed its essential character since—mature trees, deep lots, and a real mix of architectural styles from turn-of-the-century brick Colonials to mid-century modern to Cape Cods, each one different enough that you notice them as you drive through. Three of the city's six lakes sit right here (West, Middle, and Church), and you're walking distance from the St. Francis of Assisi Sculpture Garden, an 11-acre wooded park at Marywood Academy, plus Frederick Meijer Gardens is on the northeast edge. Downtown is five minutes away when you need it, but the neighborhood itself stays quiet—railroad tracks separate the residential blocks from the industrial area to the south, which keeps the feel insular despite the proximity to the city. Homes here sell fast and rarely sit long, which tells you something about how people feel once they land in it; the architecture and tree canopy are what pull you in, and the location is what keeps you there.
