The water came first. This is the residential ring around Reeds Lake, a 262-acre all-sports lake about 50 feet deep at the east end of Wealthy Street in the City of East Grand Rapids. In the streetcar era the west shore was Ramona Park — a trolley-line amusement park named in an 1886 newspaper contest after the heroine of a Helen Hunt Jackson novel. For decades people rode horse-drawn tram, steam railroad, and electric interurban out to a Ferris wheel, a carousel, a miniature railway, wooden roller coasters, and the Ramona Gardens dance pavilion. When postwar cars let people travel farther, attendance fell, and in 1954 East Grand Rapids voted to close and raze the park, redeveloping the shoreline into the homes, shops, and parks that fill it now. A Michigan Historical Marker stands where the coasters once ran.
