Walkable and connected
Median $411K·Walkability 6.3/10·Schools 4.0/10
On a late afternoon when the brick facades catch the western light, you'll see why this stretch adjacent to downtown has stuck around since 1844. We're talking 1,300 homes spanning nearly every American architectural style—Greek Revival, Prairie, Victorian, you name it—all packed into about a square mile. Frank Lloyd Wright's Meyer May House sits here, a 1908 masterpiece that alone would make the area worth a drive, but it's really the whole block-by-block mix that gets you: converted churches turned into lofts with soaring ceilings, grand Victorian homes split into condos, tree-lined streets that feel both urban and grounded. The neighborhood was nearly demolished in the '60s—developers wanted to tear out 75% of it—but residents fought back and won, making this one of the first successful cases under the National Historic Preservation Act. Now it's a living place with bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and parks scattered throughout, home to around 4,400 people. Downtown Grand Rapids is a short walk away, and the area hosts a walking tour and home tour each May if you want to geek out on the architecture.
