On the north side of the Grand River, right where the Rogue River empties in, sits the older railroad community of Belmont — the geography this page actually covers. The internal label attached to the boundary is "English Meadows," but you won't find that name on a plat map, a street sign, or a single listing out here; people orient by Belmont, the Rogue River, and Rockford Schools instead. Belmont was platted in 1874 and once anchored the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad's activity in Plainfield Township, back when the surrounding country ran on sawmills and the lumber trade. The Rogue River itself started life as the "Rouge" — the spelling flipped in the 1800s after a Wisconsin mapmaker's printing error stuck, and it never got changed back.
