The name traces back to East Kentwood High School, which opened in the fall of 1970. The district built it as "East" expecting a second campus — a "West Kentwood" — to follow, but that school was never constructed, so the single name endured and eventually came to describe the whole eastern side of the City of Kentwood. There's no formally platted neighborhood by this name. Locals use it for the stretch of Kentwood along the Kalamazoo Avenue SE and Breton Avenue SE corridors, roughly between 52nd and 60th Streets, that feeds the high school at 6230 Kalamazoo Ave SE — one of only two public high schools in Michigan with an ice arena on campus.
