West Grand Neighborhood Organization

The West Grand Neighborhood Organization has been the northwest side's convening body since 1974 — a nonprofit that speaks for both residents and the businesses along its corridors, and the second-largest neighborhood group in Grand Rapids. From its office on Leonard Street it runs the unglamorous work that holds a district together: a spring cleanup that pulls in more than a thousand volunteers, an annual Dumpster Day at Richmond Park, block-club connectors who greet new arrivals, and thirty years of tending the Turner Street gateway gardens and what it calls the country's largest raingarden.

Two business districts sit inside its boundaries. Bridge Street, just across the Grand River from downtown, has drawn major private investment — Rockford Construction has put roughly $150 million into new and renovated West Side buildings, and Bridge Street Market opened as a walkable grocery in 2018. West Leonard runs more than a mile and a half with 300-plus storefronts, from long-established businesses to recent openings; its business association dates to 1985. The corridors' trash cans and lighting come partly through the city's West Side Corridor Improvement Authority.

The area's roots are industrial: this was a neighborhood built around Grand Rapids' furniture factories, laced together by the river, canals, and streetcar lines. That heritage still shows on the ground — the 1847 origins of City Brewery on the West Side, a brewhouse reopened in a 1914 Bridge Street building, old factories turned into housing. Boundaries run from the Grand River to Bristol, Bridge Street to the city line.
