Wyoming Park

The name here goes back further than the city that surrounds it. Before the modern City of Wyoming existed, Wyoming Park was its own school district — its high school won University of Michigan accreditation and graduated a first senior class in 1938 — and in 1962 it merged with the Newhall and Rogers districts to form today's Wyoming Public Schools. So the label isn't a marketing coinage; it's a community identity older than the municipality. The wider area was organized under Byron Township in 1832, split off as Wyoming Township in 1848, and finally incorporated as the City of Wyoming in 1959 after years of water, sewer, and annexation wrangling with Grand Rapids and Grandville. "Wyoming" itself is a borrowed name, carried west from Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley and rooted in the Delaware (Munsee) phrase for "at the big river flat."
