Shelbyville

The railroad depot is long gone, but the ghost of it still shapes this place—a village born from the tracks in the eighteen-seventies, named after the station agent Mr. Shelby (with "ville" tacked on to avoid duplication elsewhere). What remains is a scatter of houses and working land between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, anchored by a general store from eighteen eighty-one that now runs as a flea market, a tavern that knows how to pour a beer, and the presence of Doan's Lake, where photographers and fishermen show up to remember what the area looked like when it mattered more to the region's livestock trade. The countryside here is genuine—acreage, trees, trails cutting through thirty-some acres, the kind of property where you can actually see horizon.
