John Ball Area Neighbors (SWAN)

On the west side of Grand Rapids, the civic work around John Ball Park runs through John Ball Area Neighbors, a nonprofit based at 1120 Bridge Street NW and connected to the broader Southwest-area neighborhood network. Its stated aim is plain enough — a connected, informed community with a real say in what happens on its own blocks — and the way that shows up is mostly through hands-on programs rather than pronouncements. Two of them are easy to point to. The organization runs a community garden at 700 Butterworth Street, operated with The Rapids and supported by John Ball Zoo, where residents can adopt individual raised beds for the season. And it hosts StorytimeGR, a recurring storytelling gathering held at Lincoln Park on Bridge Street NW, the same address as the association's home base. Beyond those, the group serves as a clearinghouse: newsletters, volunteer sign-ups, partnership opportunities with other west-side organizations, and a channel for residents and business owners to flag concerns and shape neighborhood projects. It is a working nonprofit with an executive director and a phone line, not just a mailing list, which matters when there's a grant to chase or a cleanup to coordinate. The neighborhood it serves has deep roots — the area became part of Grand Rapids in the 1850s and carried a strong Polish presence for generations, centered on Sacred Heart parish in the district once known as Sercowo.
