Honeymoon Lake

Early morning light on the water—that's when this stretch really sings. Cabins and cottages cluster around the lakes here, most of them the kind of place where a back deck and a fireplace feel like all you need. You'll find newer plumbing and rewired electrics alongside knotty pine interiors and screened porches; some are turnkey, others waiting for a little elbow grease and imagination. The area sits in a pocket of thick forest and open water, where summers mean fishing and relaxation, winters bring snowmobiles onto the trails, and fall and spring give you reasons to keep coming back. About 7 minutes on foot gets you to Manistee National Forest, and hundreds of federal acres spread across this region—plenty of room to roam. It's roughly two hours north from downtown, far enough to feel genuinely removed but close enough for a real weekend escape. The Chain of Lakes draws people here year after year; once you've caught the view from a bluff overlooking the water, it's hard to stay away.
