Green Lake

Biking or driving out here, the landscape opens up in the way only West Michigan knows how—a few miles south of the city bustle and suddenly you're in a different rhythm altogether. The lake itself is the draw, a spring-fed body of water so clear you can see down to the sandy bottom, deep enough (69 feet at its deepest) to hold serious fish—largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappie—which brings people back season after season. The homes around it run the full spectrum, from year-round residences to summer cottages, with new construction scattered throughout offering granite counters and flex rooms, all built to Caledonia School District standards. There's a public boat launch on the south side managed by the Michigan DNR, and a small condo development from the late nineties where you can park and walk straight to the water. No homeowners association looming overhead, just neighbors who chip in voluntarily for lake upkeep and the Fourth of July fireworks—the kind of arrangement that only works when people actually want to be here together.
