One of the oldest and most central corners of the City of Wyoming, this neighborhood sits just south of the Grand Rapids line, built around the intersection of Division Avenue South and 36th Street SW. It grew up along what was once Gull Prairie Road — improved to a plank road in 1854, and known today as Division Avenue — a corridor that turned this into a natural spine for early settlement, cutting the Grand Rapids–Kalamazoo trip from two days to one. The name traces back to the Godwin family, among the first to settle Wyoming Township in the 1840s; an early Godwin served as a county supervisor, and the family name carried over to the school district that still anchors the area. Schooling here organized remarkably early: a log schoolhouse near Clyde Park and 36th gave way to a brick school by the late 1860s, and a school has stood at the northwest corner of 36th and Division since 1924, on the site of today's high school. Later platting through the 1920s, alongside a nearby General Motors stamping plant, filled in the streets you see now.
