On the far southwest edge of Grand Rapids, where the city line blurs into Wyoming along Godfrey Avenue and Chicago Drive, Galewood is one of those places whose name outlived its official borders. It grew up around the railroad — the Pere Marquette chose the sprawling Wyoming rail yard north of Chicago Drive as its main repair shops in 1905, and the work that came with it, alongside the old Kelvinator plant and the area's furniture factories, filled in the residential grid. Galewood was one of a trio of villages here — Galewood, Urbandale, and Burlingame — that eventually folded into what's now the Godfrey-Lee area. Today the name survives mostly as Galewood Avenue SW and as the shorthand locals still use for this pocket north of Chicago Drive and west of US-131.
