Late afternoon here is when the light turns amber and the river—the Big Sable winding through properties on the edge of town—actually looks like it's worth the drive out. The village itself is small enough that you can walk the blocks and take in the corner lots, the steel roofs catching that slant of sun, the hardwood and granite that owners have bothered to put into homes they mean to keep. You'll find Methodist and Catholic churches anchoring the older streets, trails threading through for hiking and snowmobiling when the season turns, and enough quiet acreage around the perimeter that you're never quite sure where the village ends and the forest begins. About 15 miles from Ludington, the nearest real city, this is the kind of place where a pole barn and workshop aren't decoration—they're how people actually live. The hunting and fishing aren't metaphors either.
