Early autumn light turns the brick storefronts golden—that's when this place shows its age best, the 19th-century architecture from the sawmill era catching the low angle of the sun. The downtown still holds its shape from when timber moved through here, Victorian brick still standing after the lumber camps gave way to farms and lake houses. A few miles in any direction, the water opens up: Coady Lake, Spruce Lake, and smaller ponds tucked into properties where people keep acreage enough to move around, to build workshops, to watch wildlife from the kitchen window. The annual fall festival brings the county out for the parade and tractor pulls—a rhythm that's been going on long enough to feel like bedrock.
