Set about seven miles southwest of downtown Grand Rapids — a 12-to-15-minute drive — this is the central, downtown core of the City of Grandville: the gridded residential blocks wrapped around the commercial strip along Chicago Drive and Wilson Avenue. Grandville itself dates to the 1830s, founded in 1833 and incorporated as a city in 1933. It sat at a bend in the Grand River during Michigan's logging years, keeping timber moving as the water turned northwest toward Grand Haven, and an earlier settlement here went by "Oakestown" for the oak groves that once covered the ground. The name that stuck simply pairs "grand" with the old suffix for a town. There's no separate founding story for the central part of Grandville — its history is the city's history, told a few blocks at a time.
