The name is older than any organization here: this southwest-side ground was once thick with black walnut trees, prized enough that people reportedly drove horse-drawn buggies in from as far as Chicago to gather the nuts. But the more consequential piece of local history is who built the place. Black Hills is often cited as the first Grand Rapids neighborhood bought and developed by Black contractors, laid out to provide housing for the Black community at a time when few other options existed — a founding fact that still shapes how the area understands itself. That heritage gives the neighborhood association a clear job: keeping residents connected and giving them a say. The Black Hills Neighborhood Association runs the ordinary machinery of civic life on this scale — meetings where street projects and city notices get discussed, and local improvement efforts that residents can actually turn out for. Community identity here leans on nearby gathering spots as much as formal programs. Roberto Clemente Park, a roughly 12-acre space just to the north between Black Hills and Roosevelt Park, carries soccer fields, a baseball diamond, a skate park, and picnic shelters, and functions as shared ground for this corner of the southwest side. The industrial past is visible too, in the old furniture-era factories and warehouses near the river — some, like the Luce Furniture warehouse, being reworked for new uses. For the streets, the river edge, and the housing of the neighborhood, see the Black Hills neighborhood page.
