Neighbors of Belknap Lookout (NOBL)

When the Gerald R. Ford Freeway was cut through in 1963, crews hauled fill out of Belknap Park and severed the hill's old walking routes to the Michigan Street business district — a neighborhood that had been part of the city center suddenly found itself stranded above it. Residents responded by organizing, and by 1980 that effort had become Neighbors of Belknap Lookout, a resident-led nonprofit that still runs the place's civic life. NOBL's work is hands-on. From a clubhouse at 700 Clancy Avenue it operates the Belknap Tool Library out of the basement, lending mowers, weed whips, leaf blowers, and garden tools to anyone in the neighborhood, and it keeps up the Belknap Collaborative Garden. The organization plants flowers and trees, runs cleanup days, throws parties in the parks, and coaches volunteers into leadership roles — the slow, repetitive work of stewardship rather than one-off events. Advocacy is the other half of the job. With the Medical Mile booming along the neighborhood's Michigan Street edge and hospital and university development pressing in, NOBL has spent years at the table on land use and preservation, protecting the things that make the hill distinct. Two of those are the cobblestone stretches of Trowbridge Street and North Avenue, laid in the 19th century and designated local historic landmarks in 1975. Another is Coit School, built in 1880 and often cited as the oldest operating school building in Michigan, restored in 2003.
