If the job is in Grand Rapids and the search is district-first, this is the list: every school district within a 30-minute drive of downtown, ranked by the median price of homes inside its boundary. Each district page shows its schools, ratings, and current homes for sale. For the full 13-county ranking, see the West Michigan version.

Every number in this ranking is computed from source data: each closed sale from the last twelve months is matched to the school-district boundary it sits inside, the medians are taken per district, and only districts within a real routed 30-minute drive of downtown Grand Rapids make the cut. Districts with fewer than 25 closings are held out until the sample is big enough to trust.

Below the ranking, each of the least expensive commutable districts gets a written profile — the ground it covers, the housing inside it, current pricing — plus a link to the district page with its schools, ratings, and homes for sale.

How we ranked: Ranked by median home price of homes inside each district boundary (lowest first), limited to districts within a 30-minute drive of downtown Grand Rapids and with at least 25 closed sales in the last 12 months.

Each profile comes from our on-the-ground research for that place; the stats underneath are the same live numbers that produced the ranking. Rankings shown as of July 2026.

1. Godfrey-Lee Public Schools

When you pull up to a school in this district, you're struck by how compact everything feels—1.4 square miles, the smallest district in Michigan by land area—yet there's nothing cramped about it. Five schools serving 1,737 students means the kind of place where staff and families actually know one another, and that shows up in how staff talk about their work. Lee High School got a major renovation completed in fall 2023, with classrooms and spaces that reflect what happens when a community votes to invest: a 2020 bond passed, and the building came back refreshed.

2. Godwin Heights Public Schools

The high school opened in February 1973, all clean lines and practical brick, the kind of building that doesn't apologize for what it is. Godwin Heights Public Schools serves about 2,000 students across five schools on the south side of the greater Grand Rapids area, with roots stretching back to 1837 when the first one-room schoolhouse stood here—officially founded three decades later, named after Augustus Godwin, an early county supervisor. The district spans roughly 2,400 acres of land defined by ranch homes and a grocery store steps away, coffee shops and restaurants that same distance, 240 of them within a mile.

3. Kelloggsville Public Schools

The Rockets, as the athletic teams are called, compete across multiple campuses spread through Grand Rapids, Wyoming, and Kentwood—a three-city footprint that means families here have chosen a district embedded in some of the region's most densely populated communities. The district spans 2,603 acres and serves roughly 2,200 students, with seven to eight schools including two high schools (one of them, 54th Street Academy, operating as an alternative program), one middle school, three elementary schools, and an early childhood center. Downtown Grand Rapids sits just 11 minutes away by car, and Gerald R.

4. Wyoming Public Schools

The daily rhythm here centers on a school district that's rebuilt itself from the ground up—over $100 million in improvements have transformed classrooms, added secure entrances, and installed air-conditioned spaces across seven schools serving nearly 3,900 students. The district itself, formed in 1962 from a merger of three smaller systems, restructured again in 2012 to consolidate its high schools into one 10-12 campus, which shifted how families navigate their kids' education through town.

5. Grand Rapids Public Schools

Grand Rapids Public Schools has been shaping West Michigan education for more than 150 years, operating 51 schools across the city and serving nearly 14,000 students in grades PK–12—making it the state's eighth-largest district and the third-largest employer in Grand Rapids. The system offers the widest range of school choices in the region, from neighborhood schools to theme-based programs and Centers of Innovation that connect students with professional mentors and internship opportunities; City High Middle School, one of the district's test-in schools, consistently ranks among the top performing schools in Michigan according to U.S. News & World Report.

6. Sparta Area Schools

The Paula Red apple was discovered here in 1960, named for a farmer's wife, and that kind of specificity—that sense of place rooted in one person's garden—still defines Sparta Area Schools. Located about 20 minutes north of Grand Rapids in Michigan's Fruit Ridge, the district serves roughly 2,400 students across four schools with student-teacher ratios hovering around 17-to-1, the kind of size where staff know their students by name.

7. Kentwood Public Schools

When you pull into Kentwood, you notice the breadth right away—storefronts and homes that don't match a single template, parks tucked between neighborhoods. Kentwood Public Schools runs 9,422 students across 16 schools, with programs like the ABC Orchestra out of East Kentwood High School playing real gigs and the Aquatic Center drawing crowds from across the area. The district spends $13,063 per student annually with a student-teacher ratio of 19:1. Homes run around $345K, and you're close enough to downtown Grand Rapids (18 minutes) and Gerald R. Ford Airport (9 minutes) that commuting isn't a hassle.

8. Comstock Park Public Schools

You head north from downtown Grand Rapids—just under fifteen minutes or so—and the landscape opens up into something more spacious, where Comstock Park Public Schools sits across nearly 10 square miles of Alpine, Plainfield, and Walker townships. The district runs lean: about 1,980 students spread across five schools, from Greenridge's early learners through Comstock Park High School, which has been educating kids here since 1902. What stands out is the ratio—fifteen students per teacher, which is genuinely lower than the state average—and the fact that achievement numbers land above state benchmarks across the board.
