How Opportunity Zones work
What is an Opportunity Zone?
A Qualified Opportunity Zone is a federally designated census tract where investors can defer and reduce capital-gains taxes by reinvesting gains into property or businesses within the zone. The designations were created by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Are Opportunity Zones still active in 2026?
Yes. The 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act made the program permanent. The current designation map stays in effect through the end of 2028, and a fresh round of Michigan zones takes effect January 1, 2027.
How many Opportunity Zones are in the Grand Rapids region?
There are 28 designated Opportunity Zones across the West Michigan counties we cover — concentrated in Grand Rapids, Wyoming, Muskegon, and Holland, with zones in several smaller cities and townships too.
